I've now imported my zombie character into Maya. I had to reduce the amount of polygons on the character quite a bit for maya to run smoothly. This needed to be done anyway at some point if the character was going to be imported into a game engine. The character has been fully rigged; so I've created a couple of pose renders demonstrating the rig. The next step will be to animate some walk cycles for the character. I'm now a lot more comfortable with the skeleton tools in maya since doing my robot model. The rigging process has gone a lot smoother this time round and hopefully animating with this rig will be easier as well.
