Making My Web Comic

I was inspired to make a comic with quite a lifelike feel. I didn't want my characters to simply be drawn on computer even if it had saved me a lot of time. I really liked the recent advert by TANDEM films for marmite. In this advert they used cut out characters in a 3D space.

This style has a really sharp visual pop that I wanted to follow. So what I have done is to make painted cut outs which will be scanned into my computer and then pasted over a different background to give the images a sharp and 3D look.

To make theses character cut outs I needed to first design my characters for each strip. After I had done this I did sketches of each one of the character for its individual frame. These sketches acted as frames as they would later be painted with acrylic based paints.

All that remained after the characters had been painted was to cut them out. I left a white border around the characters just to give them a bit more contrast which helps the illusion of a 3D image.

I'm really happy with the final look of my comics as I feel they look a lot more detailed than my computer based illustration. I also think I achieved the 3D look I was wanting effectively without it being to distracting. However I do think my method of making these cutouts took a very long time. This did however make finishing each comic more rewarding
